UNOC 3: OCEAN EMERGENCY | UNITED NATIONS OCEAN CONFERENCE
Selection by Sonia Perrin | 20 artworks
Co-hosted by the governments of France and Costa Rica, the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 3) will take place in Nice, France, from June 9 to 13, 2025.
The event, held under the theme “Accelerating Action and Mobilizing All Actors to Conserve and Sustainably Use the Ocean,” aims to bring the ocean back to the center of the global agenda. The goal of UNOC is to strengthen efforts toward Sustainable Development Goal 14: “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.”
The Conference involves all relevant stakeholders, bringing together the 193 UN Member States, NGOs, international institutions, civil society actors, researchers, academics, scientists, and committed artists.
While oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, their vital role in climate balance and biodiversity has never been more at risk. In the face of this environmental emergency, many artists are choosing to highlight the fragility of marine ecosystems. Their works immerse us in the deep sea, denounce rising sea levels, plastic pollution, or disappearing species. They raise awareness or inspire awe, offering a glimpse into a world that is as mysterious as it is vulnerable.
